Zara's return policy is 30 days from purchase. That sounds simple, but the specifics — especially around online returns, sale items, and condition requirements — trip people up. Here's what you actually need to know.
The basics
- 30 days from the purchase date for full-price items
- 30 days for sale items too (Zara doesn't restrict returns on sale merchandise, which is better than many fast-fashion competitors)
- Items must be unworn, unwashed, and in original condition with tags attached
- Original receipt or order confirmation required
In-store returns
Bring the item with its tags and your receipt to any Zara store. They'll process the refund to your original payment method. No appointment needed, no time limit within the window.
One thing to know: Zara stores do check condition carefully. A seam that came loose from normal wear probably won't fly. A manufacturing defect — a broken zipper, a button that fell off — is a different story and usually gets handled.
Online returns
Free in-store drop-off: Take your online order to a Zara store and return it there — no shipping required, refund processes faster.
Paid mail return: Zara charges a fee (around $3.95 in the US) to return by mail using their prepaid label. This is deducted from your refund. To avoid the fee, return in person.
Return steps:
- Start your return at zara.com or the Zara app
- Select the items you're returning
- Choose drop-off point or mail label
- Package item with the return slip
- Refund posts within 2–4 weeks for mail returns; faster for in-store drop-offs
What can't be returned
- Items without original tags
- Worn or washed items
- Underwear, swimwear (hygiene reasons — liner must be intact)
- Perfumes and cosmetics once opened
- Items marked "Final Sale"
The 30-day clock: when does it start?
For in-store purchases, it starts the day you buy. For online orders, it starts when you receive the item — specifically, the delivery date shown in your order confirmation, not when it ships.
Exchanges
Zara allows exchanges in-store within the same 30-day window. You can swap for a different size or color if it's in stock. Exchanges aren't available for online orders — you'd need to return and repurchase.
International purchases
Items purchased in the US can only be returned in the US. If you bought something while traveling internationally, you'll need to return it in that country.
Zara's app makes this easier
The Zara app stores your purchase history and QR codes for returns. If you lose your receipt, pull up the app — store associates can scan the QR code from your phone. It works well.
The honest read
Zara's policy is fine for fast-fashion. Thirty days is enough time for most returns, the no-fee in-store option is genuinely convenient, and they don't penalize you on sale items. The mail return fee is annoying but avoidable.
The condition requirement is real though. Zara inspects items — if something looks worn, they'll decline the return. Don't try to return something you've clearly used.
If you're unsure whether to keep it
Zara doesn't hold its resale value particularly well — it's fast fashion designed for short trend cycles. If you're on the fence about a Zara purchase near the end of your 30 days, the resale fallback probably isn't compelling. Return it if you're not going to wear it.
