Walmart Return Policy: Everything You Need to Know

Walmart accepts most returns within 90 days. Here's what's covered, what the electronics and marketplace exceptions are, and how to return without a receipt.

Walmart's standard return window is 90 days for most items — one of the more generous windows in mass retail. Here's what the policy actually covers.

Standard policy

  • 90 days from purchase for a full refund or exchange for most items
  • Items in original condition preferred; packaging not always required
  • Receipt preferred; Walmart can look up most purchases by payment card or Walmart account

The 90-day window is longer than most big-box competitors.

Electronics: shorter windows

Electronics have stricter return windows:

  • Televisions, computers, cameras, camcorders, portable audio: 30 days
  • Drones: 30 days
  • Prepaid wireless phones: 14 days

What can't be returned

  • Firearms, ammo, and pepper spray (by law)
  • Opened consumables (food, opened personal care)
  • Prescription medications
  • Gas-powered equipment after use (mowers, generators)
  • Items that have been damaged through misuse
  • Marketplace seller items with "Final Sale" designation (see below)

Walmart Marketplace

Walmart.com includes third-party marketplace sellers. These sellers set their own return policies, which may differ significantly from Walmart's standard policy. Before returning a Marketplace item, check the seller's specific return policy on the product page. Walmart's 90-day guarantee applies only to items sold directly by Walmart.

How to return in-store

Bring the item with the receipt (or your payment card for lookup) to the customer service desk. No appointment needed. Refunds process to the original payment method.

How to return online

  1. Go to walmart.com and log into your account
  2. Navigate to your orders and select the item to return
  3. Choose in-store return or shipping label option
  4. In-store returns are free; mail returns are typically free for Walmart-sold items

No receipt

Walmart can look up purchases by:

  • Original payment card (credit, debit)
  • Walmart account order history
  • Walmart Pay

Without any documentation, returns may be processed as a merchandise exchange or store credit, not a cash refund. Limits apply to no-receipt returns.

Walmart+ members

Walmart+ membership doesn't significantly change the return policy, but purchases are easier to track through the app's order history.

The honest read

Ninety days is genuinely useful for clothing. The Marketplace distinction is the most common source of confusion — if you bought something from a third-party seller on walmart.com, you're subject to their policy, not Walmart's.

Walmart clothing and resale

Walmart's clothing (George, Time and Tru, No Boundaries) doesn't hold meaningful secondary market value. The return policy is the right option for anything that doesn't work. Cove focuses on fashion brands where secondary market resale is meaningful — that's generally not the territory of mass-market Walmart clothing.
