TJ Maxx has a 30-day return window for most items. Given the nature of off-price retail — no-receipt purchases, gifts, impulse buys at the rack — the details matter more here than at other stores. Here's the complete picture.

The TJ Maxx tag is key. Unlike most retail where you can remove tags once you're keeping something, TJ Maxx returns without the orange tag are handled differently.
No receipt: what happens
Without a receipt, TJ Maxx will issue a merchandise credit (store gift card) rather than a cash or card refund. The credit is issued at the current or lowest recent selling price, which may be less than you paid.
You'll need a valid ID for no-receipt returns. TJ Maxx tracks no-receipt return activity and may limit returns from customers who return frequently without receipts.
With receipt: full refund
With the original receipt, you receive a refund to the original payment method — cash for cash purchases, back to the card for card purchases.
How to return in-store
Bring the item with the TJ Maxx tag attached and your receipt (if you have it) to the customer service area at any TJ Maxx store. Marshalls is a sister brand (both owned by TJX Companies) — you can return TJ Maxx items at Marshalls and vice versa.

TJ Maxx has an online store. Online purchases can be returned:
In-store: Bring your online order to any TJ Maxx or Marshalls store. Free, immediate processing.
By mail: A prepaid return label is available; a $10.99 return fee is deducted from your refund. Refunds process within 10–14 business days.
The mail return fee is steep. In-store is the significantly better option.
What about items without tags?
If the orange TJ Maxx tag has been removed, the return process is more difficult. You may still get store credit, but the associate has more discretion. Don't remove TJ Maxx tags until you're certain you're keeping something.
The honest read
Thirty days with receipt is standard. The orange tag requirement and the receipt-or-merchandise-credit trade-off are the main things that trip people up at TJ Maxx. Keep the tags on until you've decided, and keep receipts (or use a card that can be looked up at the register — TJ Maxx can often look up card purchases even without the receipt).
TJ Maxx and resale
