Theory's return policy is 30 days for most items — standard for contemporary designer retail. Here's what the policy covers and where the exceptions are.
Standard policy
- 30 days from purchase for a full refund to original payment method
- Items must be unworn, unwashed, in original condition with all tags attached
- Receipt or order confirmation required
Final sale
Final sale items are non-returnable. Theory marks these clearly on product listings and receipts. During sale periods, a portion of their inventory (particularly at steeper discounts) moves to final sale.
How to return in-store
Bring the item with tags and proof of purchase to any Theory boutique. Refunds process to the original payment method.
How to return online
By mail: Start the return at theory.com. Prepaid return label provided. A return fee is deducted from your refund (check current rate at checkout or in the return portal — Theory's fees have varied). Refunds process within 5–7 business days of warehouse receipt.
In-store: Free — return online orders at any Theory location.
Outlet purchases
Theory outlet items have a shorter return window and may have more final sale designations. Outlet items should be returned to outlet locations; full-price store policies don't apply to outlet purchases.
Condition requirements
Theory's fabrics — wool, cashmere, technical knits, silk — require careful handling. Returns must be in original condition, unworn and unwashed. Theory inspects returns and will decline items showing signs of wear.
The honest read
Standard policy for the price point. Thirty days is enough time for most decisions. The outlet/full-price distinction matters — don't assume a Theory Factory item gets the same treatment as a full-price purchase.
Theory resale value
Theory holds excellent secondary market value. Their suiting, cashmere, and outerwear sell consistently at 40–65% of retail on TheRealReal, Poshmark, and Vestiaire Collective. Buyers specifically seek Theory for its consistent quality, making it one of the better contemporary brands for resale.
If you have Theory pieces you're not wearing, Cove tracks their secondary market value so you can see exactly what they're worth before deciding to sell or keep them.
