Target's return policy is 90 days for most items, extended to 120 days for RedCard holders. It's one of the more consumer-friendly policies in mass retail. Here's how it works.
Standard policy
- 90 days from purchase for a full refund to original payment method
- 120 days for Target RedCard (credit or debit) holders
- Items in original condition preferred; receipt or lookup required for most refunds
The 120-day RedCard extension is a real benefit — it's one of the more practical perks of having the card.
Electronics and entertainment: 30-day window
Electronics, entertainment, and similar categories have a shorter return window:
- Electronics and entertainment products: 30 days
- This includes computers, tablets, cameras, video game hardware
Target-exclusive brands
Target's own brands (A New Day, Universal Thread, Wild Fable, etc.) have a 1-year return guarantee — even longer than the standard 90 days. This applies specifically to their owned label clothing.
What can't be returned
- Open or defaced gift cards
- Opened trading card packs
- Opened collectibles
- Digital downloads
- Items marked "Final Sale" or "Non-returnable" on the product listing
- Gasoline products
How to return in-store
Bring the item to the Guest Services desk at any Target. Bring the receipt or have the original payment card — Target can look up most purchases this way. Refunds process immediately.
How to return online
In-store: Most Target.com orders can be returned to any Target store — free, immediate processing.
By mail: Some items qualify for mail returns through target.com. A prepaid shipping label is provided. Refunds process within 5–7 business days of receipt.
No receipt
Target can look up purchases through:
- Original credit or debit card
- Target Circle account
- RedCard account history
Without documentation, you may receive a merchandise exchange at the current selling price or a Target gift card, not a cash refund. Up to a certain limit per year.
Target Circle and returns
Target Circle (free loyalty program) tracks your purchases automatically. This makes no-receipt returns significantly easier — log in, look up the order, return it.
Third-party marketplace items
Target.com includes some third-party marketplace items. These may have different return policies noted on the product listing. Check before purchasing.
The honest read
Target's 90-day window (120 for RedCard) is excellent for mass retail. The 1-year guarantee on Target's own clothing brands is a standout. The main exceptions to know are electronics (30 days) and the final sale designations that appear on specific items.
Target clothing and resale
Target clothing (their in-house brands) holds minimal secondary market value. A New Day and similar Target brands occasionally appear on Poshmark but sell for very little. The return policy is a far better option than resale for Target clothing.
