Nordstrom Return Policy: Everything You Need to Know

Nordstrom's return policy is one of the most generous in retail — but it's changed. Here's exactly what's covered, what's not, and how to make a return in 2025.

Nordstrom's return policy has a legendary reputation — for decades it was essentially "return anything, anytime, no questions asked." That's no longer entirely true, but it's still one of the most generous policies in retail. Here's what it actually says in 2025.

The core policy

Nordstrom accepts returns on most items without a time limit as long as the item is in saleable condition. There's no standard 30- or 60-day window — they genuinely evaluate returns case by case.

What "saleable condition" means in practice:

  • Unworn, unwashed, undamaged
  • Tags still attached (for most categories)
  • Original packaging for certain items

You don't need the original receipt if you have the order confirmation email or if the purchase is tied to your Nordy Club account.

What's NOT returnable

The no-time-limit policy has real exceptions:

  • Beauty products — must be returned within 60 days; partially used items may be declined at store discretion
  • Designer items — some high-end items come with a "Final Sale" tag or are non-returnable; check before buying
  • Altered items — if you had something tailored or hemmed at Nordstrom, it can't be returned
  • Gift cards — no returns
  • Special-occasion wear with signs of wear — Nordstrom has gotten stricter about returns of formal dresses and event clothing that shows clear evidence of single-use

Nordstrom Rack has a separate, stricter policy (see below).

How to make a return

In-store: Bring the item to any Nordstrom location. No appointment needed. They process refunds to the original payment method on the spot.

By mail: Start the return at nordstrom.com/returns. They'll email you a prepaid USPS label. Refunds typically post within 5–7 business days of the item arriving at the warehouse.

Curbside: Many locations offer curbside return drop-off — you pull up, a store associate comes to your car, done.

Through Nordstrom app: You can initiate returns and track status through the app.

Nordstrom Rack: different rules

Nordstrom Rack has a 45-day return window with the original receipt or tags. After 45 days, returns are not accepted. The more relaxed "no time limit" policy applies only to full-line Nordstrom, not Rack.

Fine print for Rack:

  • Items must have original tags
  • Swimwear and lingerie must have hygienic liners attached
  • Final sale items cannot be returned

Nordy Club and returns

Your Nordy Club membership makes returns easier — purchases are logged to your account, so even without a receipt, store associates can look up your purchase history. This is useful for gifts you received or impulse buys where you've lost the paperwork.

The honest verdict

Nordstrom's policy is genuinely good. The case-by-case flexibility is real — if you bought something, wore it once for an event, and want to return it, you might succeed. You also might not. The store associates have discretion, and they use it. Regular customers with purchase history tend to get more flexibility.

For items that are clearly worn, damaged, or purchased more than a year ago, don't expect a return to work. The "no questions asked" era is largely over.

If you're not sure whether to keep it

That's exactly the calculation Cove helps with. If you bought something at Nordstrom and you're on the fence — keep it or return it — knowing the resale value changes the math. Something that holds 60–70% of its value on the secondary market is worth keeping even if you're not sure you'll wear it often. Something that drops to 20% resale isn't.

Cove tracks the resale value of what you own so you can make that call with real numbers.
