Madewell's return policy has a notable perk for Insider members — but even without that, it's a reasonable 30-day standard return window. Here's how it actually works.
Standard return policy
- 30 days from purchase for a full refund to original payment method
- Items must be unworn, unwashed, and in original condition with tags attached
- Receipt or order confirmation required
This is the baseline for everyone.
Madewell Insider: 1-year return window
If you're a Madewell Insider (their free loyalty program), the return window extends to 365 days from purchase. That's a significant difference — essentially a year to decide if something's working for you.
Insider is free to join. If you shop Madewell at all, it's worth joining before you buy, not after — the extended return window starts from the purchase date.
The same condition requirements apply (unworn, tags attached) — the longer window doesn't change what qualifies for a return.
Final sale
Final sale items are non-returnable regardless of Insider status. Madewell marks these clearly on the product page and receipt. During their major sales (Friends & Family, Black Friday, end-of-season clearances), a portion of inventory is final sale.
How to return in-store
Bring the item with tags and proof of purchase to any Madewell location. If you're an Insider, associates can pull up your purchase history without a physical receipt. Refunds process immediately to your original payment method.
Note: Madewell and J.Crew stores are separate — you cannot return Madewell items at J.Crew locations (they're now different companies after J.Crew's reorganization).
How to return online
In-store: Fastest option for online orders — take it to any Madewell store, no shipping needed.
By mail: Madewell charges a $7.50 return shipping fee deducted from your refund. Start the return at madewell.com, print the prepaid label, and ship it back. Refunds process within 5–7 business days of receipt.
The denim program
Madewell's "Denim Forever" program (part of their sustainability initiative) lets you bring in worn-out jeans for recycling, even if they're not Madewell brand. You get a discount on your next denim purchase. This isn't a return — it's a trade-in/recycle program — but worth knowing if you're cleaning out denim.
What about gifts?
If you received a Madewell item as a gift, you can return it in-store for store credit. You'll need the gift receipt or the order number. Without documentation, it's harder — ask at the store, but cash refunds aren't possible without proof of purchase.
Madewell's condition check
Madewell inspects returned items. Tags-removed, worn-once returns for classic pieces are a different category than clearly worn or washed items. In practice, associates have discretion, and Insider status seems to correlate with more flexibility — but don't count on returning visibly worn merchandise.
The resale angle
Madewell is one of the best-performing mid-range brands on the secondary market. Their denim specifically sells fast — Madewell jeans consistently sell at 40–60% of retail on Poshmark. Their leather goods, outerwear, and bags also hold value well.
If you have Madewell pieces you're not wearing, they're worth more than a donation bin. Cove tracks the resale value of your wardrobe so you know what your pieces are actually worth on the secondary market.
