Athleta's return policy stands out in activewear retail: their "Give-It-A-Workout" guarantee lets you return items even after wearing them for a workout, not just for manufacturing defects. Here's what it covers.
The Give-It-A-Workout Guarantee
Athleta's core return policy is different from most retailers:
- You can return items after wearing them for workouts if they don't perform as expected
- No time limit on performance-based returns
- Covers fit issues, comfort problems, and performance failures
- Does NOT require tags to be attached for performance returns
This is unusual. Most activewear retailers (including lululemon) require items to be unworn and unwashed. Athleta explicitly allows you to test the product in actual use and return it if it doesn't work.
What "performance-based" means
The guarantee applies to functional failures: a legging that shows through when you squat, a sports bra that doesn't support adequately, a fabric that chafes unexpectedly. It's meant for genuine performance issues, not just general dislike or style regrets.
In practice, Athleta associates have discretion and typically apply this generously — but it's better understood as a performance guarantee than an unlimited use-and-return policy.
Standard return window
For items you haven't worn:
- 60 days from purchase for a full refund
- Items must be in original condition with tags attached
The 60-day standard window is also more generous than average.
Final sale
Some Athleta items are marked final sale — non-returnable, with the Give-It-A-Workout guarantee not applying. Final sale is less common at Athleta than at some other Gap Inc. brands, but it does exist. Check the product listing.
How to return
In-store: Return at any Athleta location. Free, fast, and associates are typically helpful.
By mail: Start the return at athleta.com. Free return shipping on returns (no fee — one of the better online return programs in activewear). Refunds process within 5–7 business days.
Cross-brand returns
Athleta is part of Gap Inc. (along with Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy). You cannot return Athleta at Gap or Banana Republic — they're processed separately despite the same parent company.
Athleta Rewards (Loyalty)
Athleta Rewards members have purchase history in their accounts. Associates can look up purchases for returns, and points earned on returned purchases are reversed.
The honest read
Athleta's Give-It-A-Workout guarantee is real and applied. It's one of the best return policies in activewear — more honest than "satisfaction guaranteed" language that gets walked back in practice. If you bought something at Athleta and it doesn't perform, return it.
The free mail return shipping is a standout — most online retailers now charge for returns, and Athleta doesn't.
Athleta resale
Athleta holds solid resale value, particularly for their popular styles (Salutation leggings, Transcend collections). On Poshmark, Athleta pieces typically sell at 30–50% of retail. The brand's reputation for quality makes the secondary market active.
