Is Depop Legit? The Real Risks for Buyers and Sellers

Depop is a legitimate app with millions of Gen Z users — but the Google Voice scam and off-platform fraud are genuinely common. Here's how to stay safe.

Short answer: yes, Depop is a legitimate company. It was acquired by Etsy in 2021 for $1.6 billion and has over 35 million registered users. Transactions on the platform are processed through Depop's payment system, and there is buyer protection.

The reason people ask "is Depop legit" isn't usually about the company — it's about a specific, very well-documented scam that targets Depop sellers, and about the platform's historically inconsistent response to disputes.

The Google Voice scam (and why it's specifically a Depop problem)

This is the most important thing a Depop seller can know, because it's surprisingly common and surprisingly effective at tricking people who know better.

Here's how it works:

  1. A "buyer" messages you expressing strong interest in your item
  2. They say they want to verify you're a real person before paying
  3. They ask you to share a phone number so they can send you a Google Voice verification code
  4. You receive a code via text and share it with them
  5. They now own a Google Voice number linked to your real phone number, which they can use for further fraud

You never got paid. Your item is still for sale. But now a stranger has a verified phone number tied to you.

The scam works because the pretext ("I just want to verify you're real before I buy") sounds reasonable, especially to sellers excited about a sale. Never share verification codes with anyone, ever. No legitimate buyer needs a code sent to your phone. None.

Other common Depop scams

Off-platform payment. A buyer asks you to take payment via PayPal Friends & Family, Venmo, or Cash App to "avoid fees." Once you ship, you have no protection and no recourse. Depop's buyer protection only applies to transactions processed through Depop checkout.

Fake payment screenshots. A buyer sends you a screenshot of a "PayPal pending" payment and asks you to ship immediately. Screenshots can be faked in ten seconds. Don't ship anything until the money is actually in your account.

Item not as described with bad faith. A buyer purchases your item, wears it, then claims it doesn't match the description to initiate a return. Photograph everything thoroughly, including any flaws, before shipping. Your photos are your evidence.

What Depop's buyer protection actually covers

If you pay through Depop checkout:

  • Item not received → Depop refunds you
  • Item significantly not as described → you can open a dispute

The window for opening a dispute is 30 days from purchase, which is more generous than Poshmark's 3 days. But "significantly not as described" is the standard — minor differences in color or fit don't automatically qualify.

Depop processes payments through Stripe, which means standard credit card chargeback protections also apply as a backup.

Is Depop good for buying vintage and designer?

This is where Depop genuinely shines compared to alternatives — the inventory is real, the curation is high quality (especially for vintage), and prices are often better than Poshmark for specific aesthetics.

The risks are proportional to price. A $25 vintage top with good seller reviews carries minimal risk. A $300 "vintage Chanel" from an account created last month carries significant risk — Depop's authentication is nonexistent, which means you're relying entirely on your own judgment and the dispute process.

For any luxury item on Depop, treat it like buying from a stranger at a vintage fair: thorough photos, specific questions, seller track record.

How to use Depop safely as a seller

  1. Only accept Depop checkout payments — full stop
  2. Never share verification codes regardless of the story behind the request
  3. Photograph everything in detail before shipping, including condition flaws
  4. Keep shipping receipts until the transaction closes
  5. If something feels off, it is. Trust your instincts and don't complete the sale

How to use Depop safely as a buyer

  1. Check seller reviews and activity — an active seller with real reviews is a real person
  2. Ask specific questions about condition; an evasive response is a signal
  3. Pay through Depop checkout only — if a seller pushes you off-platform, report them and move on
  4. Open a dispute quickly if something is wrong — don't wait weeks

The bottom line

Depop is a real platform with a real community. The scams that hurt people aren't Depop itself — they're peer-to-peer fraud that happens when people move off-platform or hand over information they shouldn't. Stay in-app, pay through Depop checkout, and photograph everything.

If you're building a resale business on Depop and want to know what your closet is actually worth before you start listing — what you paid, what it's selling for today, what's worth listing versus donating — that's exactly what Cove tracks.

Stop researching. Start selling.

Cove automates the pricing research, timing, and listing so you don't have to.
